This project was for a full bathroom renovation in a home located on Alfred Street, Cromer. The client, an artist and school teacher, had a clear vision for the space and came to us with pre-selected finishes, fixtures, and fittings.
Our scope of work included an initial design consultation and budget assessment, followed by complete demolition of the existing bathroom back to its framing. We installed new electrical and plumbing service lines to suit the client’s selections, then lined and waterproofed the area with fibre cement sheeting.
High-set tiling, reinstatement of all bathroom elements including vanity units, bath, shower screens, and tapware, completed the renovation. The cost to renovate was less than $35,000 and completed within four weeks.

Scope of Work
The initial consultation involved price gauging and design development. In this particular case, the client, an artist and school teacher, had a clear vision of what she wanted. She had conducted extensive research and had already selected the tiles, vanity units, plumbing fittings, and light fixtures for the project.
The scope of the work included the demolition of the existing bathroom, taking the space back to its frame structure. The insulation was removed, and new service lines, including electrical and water, were reticulated to accommodate the newly selected outlets and fittings.
The next phase involved lining all walls with fibre cement, waterproofing the surface area, and tiling the walls up to the high ceilings. The final step was the reinstallation of all shower screens, fittings, fixtures, vanity units, bath, and tapware.
Interior design

Unique aspects
This project was particularly unique due to the client’s natural artistic flair and the unconventional materials chosen. The client’s selections were somewhat abstract, requiring careful attention to detail to ensure the final result aligned precisely with her vision. Despite the unique nature of the design, combining constructability with the client’s desires did not present significant challenges.
Materials used
The materials selected for the project included:
- Walls: The walls were lined with six-millimetre fibre cement sheeting and coated with Gripset 38 FC waterproofing membrane, a reinforced fibre latex membrane suitable for both internal and external applications.
- Tiling: The walls were tiled up to the ceiling with 20-millimetre travertine tiles, which were sealed prior to installation.
- Shower: The shower cubicle was recessed and finished with the same tiles, incorporating a linear waste grate for drainage.
- Bathtub: A freestanding, almond-shaped bathtub was installed with a floor-mounted faucet.
The total expenditure for the bathroom’s PC items amounted to $5,500.00, which is considered standard for such projects. However, the tiles were a higher-end selection, costing approximately $3,000.00, which is above the normal range for similar projects.
